American sports

Hi guys! How are you? I hope you and your family are well!
It's been a long time since we last met!

๐ŸŽฟ⛄How was your ski trip? Did you have a good time? What was the weather like? Did you learn to ski?

I hope to see you guys soon and to learn every little detail ๐Ÿ˜€  But in the meanwhile, we can keep in touch via the Internet!

๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ€Let's keep on talking about sport! But forget the extreme sports or the dangerous & exciting activities we've learned in our unit 3.
Today's class is on American sports!

๐Ÿ’ญ Can you mention some typical American sports? Can you tell the difference between soccer and American football? Where is the baseball stadium in Rimini?
What was the name of our local baseball team?

Now, open your book: p. 198
Look and the pictures and the titles: try to guess what the content is about.

๐Ÿ“บLet's watch a video now: it's on baseball.
Have you ever played baseball? Have you ever watched a baseball game?
Then, do the comprehension check: how many questions did you get right?
Watch the video again and answer the following questions:

1) Why is baseball considered "the national pastime in America"?
2) What do you need to play baseball?
3) How can you "score a home run" in baseball?
5) Who are the New York Yankees?
6) How long does a baseball game last?
7) What do baseball fans do when they go to a baseball game?

Scrivi le tue risposte nello stesso foglio word!

That's all for today!
Is this lesson difficult? Is there anything you don't understand? Is there anything you would change?

Please, let me know: write an email message or just say "hi" in the section "Post a comment" below!
Bye for now and take care ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘‹

๐Ÿš€Who are the main characters?

๐Ÿš€Where does the scene take place ?

๐Ÿš€What can you see in the background ?

VOCABULARY to describe the characters. Identify each character: Katherine, Dorothy or Mary?

a) smart     clever    thinks outside the box       curious

b) persevering     respectful      ambitious     takes her responsibilities seriously

c) flirtatious     persuasive        determined     self-confident     playful (= scherzosa)

Listen to the plot of the film, recorded with the app From text to speech

In 1961 Katherine Johnson , Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson were working at NASA during the preparation for the launch of the astronaut John Glenn’s spaceship. Their life was not easy; they worked hard, and also had to face prejudice and injustice. At that time, in the USA, racial segregation was still a sad reality. African Americans were paid less, did not get promotion, and had segregated libraries, dining rooms, toilets and even coffee machines at work! Mary  dreamt to become an engineer, but many American colleges were not open to black people. She convinced a judge to permit her to attend night classes and became NASA’s and America’s first female aeronautical engineer.

Women also had to fight for the same rights as men. Katherine Johnson could not go to important meetings, just because she was a woman.

Katherine Johnson is the film’s main character. Her calculations helped John Glenn become the first American to orbit the earth. She continued working at NASA for a long time. In 2015, when she was 97, President Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the most important awards for American citizens. But everyone  will  remember Katherine  not only for her great scientific talent, but also for her determination to challenge race and sex discrimination.

People who made a difference: Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King

As you know South Africa had a system of racial segregation called apartheid, which means "separation".
Under this system black people and white people had to live separate lives, in different neighbourhoods (= quartieri).

Racial segregation also existed in the USA.

This picture represents Martin Luther King and his daughter Yolanda. In the photo he was explaining to her that she couldn't go to "Funtown", an amusement park which was for whites only.

(...) One of the most painful experiences I have ever faced was to see her tears when I told her Funtown was closed to colored children, for I realized the first dark cloud of inferiority had floated into her little mental sky (...)

Watch the video and read the text "People who made a difference: Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King" and do the activities.

ex 1

a) They had to live separate lives from white Americans. They had to go to different school, hospitals and shops. They had to travel in a different section on public buses. Then, they couldn’t eat in the same restaurants as white Americans

b) When Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man, the bus driver called the police and she was arrested. This was the beginning of the Montgomery Bus Boycott

c) The Montgomery Bus Boycott ended in 1956 when racial segregation on buses stopped.

d) Martin Luther King was an American church Minister. He was the leader of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and of the Civil Rights Movement in the US

e) Martin Luther King’s dream was freedom and equality for all Americans.

Watch part of Martin Luther King's most famous speech
"I have a dream"

In the following video you can find the Italian translation.

Watch the video and listen to Pride (In the name of love) by the Irish band U2. It's a tribute to Martin Luther King and those who preached (= predicato, promosso, sostenuto) non violence and equality for all the people.

(...) Early morning, April four
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride (...)

These lines refer to the day when Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis.
"Free at last" is a reference to his speech I have a dream.

The Rainbow Nation

The Rainbow Nation is a term which describes South Africa after the abolition of apartheid.
Today different cultures, tribes, languages, and religions live together in harmony.

The flag of South Africa is one of the most colourful and has six colours: black, yellow, green, white, blue and red.
It symbolizes unity.

Listen to the text The Rainbow Nation. It is about Nelson Mandela, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

 Listen to the text Invictus

Mandela's life and activism have inspired musicians too. Listen to this beautiful song Mandela Day by Simple Minds (1989)

Search the Internet for the lyrics.
What is the song about? What did the band ask for?

Nelson Mandela has also inspired a famous movie: "Invictus" (2016). Watch the following video

The title comes from the fact that Mandela had the poem "Invictus", which means "unconquered", written on a scrap of paper, when he was in prison. This poem gave him the courage and the determination to endure his long years in Robben Island
