The Rainbow Nation

The Rainbow Nation is a term which describes South Africa after the abolition of apartheid.
Today different cultures, tribes, languages, and religions live together in harmony.

The flag of South Africa is one of the most colourful and has six colours: black, yellow, green, white, blue and red.
It symbolizes unity.

Listen to the text The Rainbow Nation. It is about Nelson Mandela, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

 Listen to the text Invictus

Mandela's life and activism have inspired musicians too. Listen to this beautiful song Mandela Day by Simple Minds (1989)

Search the Internet for the lyrics.
What is the song about? What did the band ask for?

Nelson Mandela has also inspired a famous movie: "Invictus" (2016). Watch the following video

The title comes from the fact that Mandela had the poem "Invictus", which means "unconquered", written on a scrap of paper, when he was in prison. This poem gave him the courage and the determination to endure his long years in Robben Island
