The day Mona Lisa disappeared

1. The Mona Lisa disappeared from the Louvre on Monday, August 21st 1911.

2.  The museum employees discovered that the painting wasn’t in its usual place.

3.  They didn’t worry because they thought that the museum photographer was taking photos of it in his studio.

4.  No, he wasn’t.

5. The museum officials called the police on Tuesday morning.

6.  One newspaper proclaimed that the thief was an American collector who wanted to make a copy of the painting, return it to the museum and keep the original. 


7. The police found the thief and the painting 27 months later.

8. The thief was Vincenzo Perugia, an Italian man.


9. Perugia declared his motives were patriotic and he wanted to sell the painting to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

10. He hid in the Louvre Museum on Sunday night . The following day he entered the room where there was the painting, he took it off the wall and then cut the Mona Lisa from the frame. Finally, Vincenzo Perugia opened a locked door with a knfe and walked out of the museum.
